Kurt Kuhn is known across Texas as a leading appellate attorney. Kurt has successfully advocated for his clients in numerous cases before the Texas Supreme Court, the Texas courts of appeals, and the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is board certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Kurt has been named a Texas “Super Lawyer” in Appellate Law every year since 2010 and has twice been named on that publication’s list of the top 50 attorneys in the Central and West Region.
Kurt regularly practices in both federal and state trial and appellate courts. He is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Texas Supreme Court. Kurt is also admitted in the Western District of Texas, the Eastern District of Texas, the Northern District of Texas, and the Southern District of Texas.
After ten years at a major Texas law firm where he was a partner and chaired the Appellate Practice Group, Kurt founded Kuhn Hobbs PLLC, a dedicated appellate law boutique. Previously, Kurt worked as an assistant solicitor general for Texas, representing the state in both civil and criminal appeals all the way from the trial court to the United States Supreme Court. Kurt has also served as an adjunct professor of appellate advocacy at the University of Texas School of Law. Kurt began his career as a law clerk for the late United States District Judge H. Franklin Waters, Chief Judge of the Western District of Arkansas.
Kurt has dedicated his professional life to the law. He is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he served as an executive editor of the Yale Law & Policy Review. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute, and is a Master in the Robert W. Calvert American Inn of Court. Widely-recognized for his speeches and articles on legal issues, he is frequently quoted as an expert on appeals and the courts by publications such as Texas Lawyer.
Away from work, Kurt enjoys spending time with his family, outdoor activities, and cooking. Kurt has coached many of kids’ sports teams, including baseball, softball, soccer and flag football. One of Kurt’s proudest achievements was being named as a recipient of the West Austin Youth Association’s Golden Whistle Award for exemplifying positive youth coaching.
